Instagram, Tesco & Ebay - latest revolutions to compete against Amazon

Instagram’s boss Adam Mosseri has laid out the vision to make the app into a retail-focused platform. The Facebook-owned app has been adding retail focused feature over the last year including a checkout feature in March, allowing users to buy items directly from the app.
The aim is to connect the dots between the army of Instagram influencers, shoppers and sellers so that users can pay for goods without leaving the app. Building the infrastructure to enable its global user base of 1 billion to shop seamlessly will be a long term project says Mosseri. Tesco is working on developing futuristic checkout-less stores in a bid to compete with Amazon Go stores. Tesco is investing in AI that will allow shoppers to buy their groceries without queuing or engaging with a till. The technology was showcased at a Tesco Express store during a capital markets day earlier this month.
An artificial-intelligence powered camera network and sensors on shelves would detect what people are picking up and putting in their baskets, and automatically charge them for their shopping as they leave through an app. Amazon Go, cashierless grocery shops, have been established in several U.S. cities and will now to open it’s first automated store near Oxford Circus, in London. Amazon Prime Day will run for 48 hours this year, the July sales event provides Prime members with massive discounts and other incentives, as a result of the huge demand Amazon often experiences an outage during this event. Last years Amazon Prime crash is thought to have cost it around £70 million.
This year Ebay is launching a ‘Crash Sale’ offering ‘blockbuster’ sales during the event, ready to cash in on the hype. Ebay will offer discounts of up to 50 per cent on leading technology brands however, if Amazon should crash during the event, Ebay has promised to pile on more “too-good-to-be-true” deals to abate shoppers need for a tech bargain. “Ebay is primed to deliver exactly what shoppers want during this year’s crash (sale),” vice president of Ebay Americas Jay Hanson said.
