Retailers are abandoning generous returns policies

The Scurri eCommerce weekly top 3

Each Monday we gather the top three ecommerce news items of the week.

A report by BarclayCard has found that 20% of retailers have tightened their returns policies over the last two years. 41% said they had changed their policy because of customers over-ordering items, while 31% claimed that shoppers were using items and then returning them.

Consumers are already feeling the impact of the stricter policies, with 14% of shoppers saying they have been penalised for returns behaviour including the likes of warning emails to account deactivation.

Royal Mail is introducing new parcel postboxes in locations across the UK following a successful trial last year.

The securely designed parcel postboxes will enable smaller retailers and ecommerce sellers to post prepaid parcels without having to visit a post office branch, including some barcoded returns parcels at any time, seven days a week

Sir Philip Green’s Arcadia Group has finally confirmed plans to shut 23 stores in the UK and Ireland as part of a CVA proposal putting 520 jobs at risk. All 11 Topman and Topshop stores in the US are due to be sold or shut down also.

The UK and Irish stores will continue to trade as normal until a decision is made on the CVA proposals next month.
