Black Friday & Cyber Weekend 2019 Reports Record Sales

Each week we gather the top three eCommerce news items of the week. Here’s what stood out for us after online retail’s biggest weekend!

Black Friday sales in the UK jumped 16.5 per cent compared to last year beating nearly all analysts expectations. This was supported by reports from Springboard suggesting footfall also jumped 3.3 per cent compared to the same day in 2018, peaking at around 5pm.

 

These figures are a dramatic improvement on Springboard’s predictions of a 4.5 per cent drop in footfall over Black Friday weekend.

 

Other leading retail analysts including GlobalData and IMRG also predicted sales growth of between two and three per cent, going so far as to predict that “sales could well be flat or even negative”. Read full article here.

It’s another record-breaking holiday season for Amazon as hundreds of millions of items were ordered between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday this year. Amazon have announced today that Cyber Monday was the biggest shopping day in its history with more items being purchased from third-party sellers as ever before.

 

Toys, Fashion, Home goods and beauty products were all in the most purchased categories. There was also a record amount of Amazon’s own devices sold throughout their stores over the period with millions more purchased worldwide compared to the same occasion last year. Read the full article here.

Black Friday emails are responsible for massive carbon emissions equivalent to 4000 return flights from London to New York. Ovo, the UK based green energy company, has released a striking new report detailing the carbon footprint of our emails.

 

According to Mike Berners-Lee, professor at Lancaster University and brother of the inventor of the internet, each email we send produces 1 gram of carbon due to the electricity used to send and display it. These figures are part of a wider report into the carbon cost of spam emails, 64 million of which are sent in the UK every day. Read the full article here
